So I realized today that there is really only one type of personality. It was an epiphany I had while doing Ideal Gas Law calculations, specifically Boyle's Law. Which basically says that given a sample of gas... nothing about it ever changes except for superficial things.
Boyle's Law
Pressure1 * Volume1 = Pressure2 * Volume2 = nRT = Some Constant for that Gas Sample
For some reason I was thinking back to last night while doing these problems and I remembered a hallmate of mine was describing me as a sweet talker. I didn't understand. I had just been talking with them about classes and not being overwhelmed and whatnot. This flashback brought me to the realization that when I was younger I was always serious. The kind of kid that always had their head in a book and couldn't take a joke, I was always
trying to help people and the whole world was, well, rather glum. Eventually I started goofing off... I had to balance my personality and behaviors. Comprehending this fact allowed me to see that everyone does this. It truly is an indirect relationship.
Ryan's Observation
Time Serious/Quiet/Responsible Personality of Person 1 + Time Fun/Loud/Irresponsible Personality Person 1
= Time Serious Personality of Person 2 + Time Fun Personality Person 2
= Amount of time a person can exhibit their personality
I guess this is kind of obvious. It implies that for every person there is only a certain amount of personality they can have (of course this is simplified because in certain cases, a persons's experience and life lessons will increase or decrease their capacity to emote and/or manifest their personality). As I was thinking this I started thinking about how some people demonstrate this proportional to time and concluded that the more time someone spends exhibiting one personality, the less the personality manifests itself.
Let's take a closer look at someone who is studying. Someone who studies the entire quarter - we'll simplify this to being "serious" - is able to focus on their work for long periods of time but only accomplish small amounts of serious-ness every day. On the other hand someone who is "fun" the whole quarter and has to stop and study the night before an exam is completely focused for only a short amount of time, but in that amount of time they have to be extremely efficient and "serious" out of pure necessity to accomplish their work.
Ryan's Law
Time Person 1 Spent Being Personality X * Severity of Manifestation of Personality X
= Time Person 1 Spent Being Personality Y * Severity of Manifestation of Personality Y
= Time Person 2 Spent Being Personality Y * Severity of Manifestation of Personality Y
= Time Person 2 Spent Being Personality X * Severity of Manifestation of Personality X
I realized that although someone may goof off a lot it it doesn't mean that they don't have the potential to be a very serious person. Anyways tying that all back to me (cause ultimately that's what this blog is about), some people are surprised why/how people can even tolerate me at all most of the time, but what they don't realize is that they are only seeing one side of me... the side of me that is almost a defense mechanism to keep people away. As most of you reading this realize, I'm often unfocused and lack serious-ness, but when a friend needs to talk or for me to be there, I will be there and I'll catch a grenade for you....
